The spur-thighed tortoises live in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula in originally mosaic-type landscapes composed of pine forests, natural shrubs, dry land crop fields and abandoned crop fields. This landscape is becoming more and more altered by pine forest plantations. We looked at where these tortoises live, how many there are, what habitat they prefer and how their numbers vary between the different habitat types.
